This guide gives indicative US pay for consumer packaged goods (CPG) roles across sales, brand, R&D and the plant floor. Every figure is taken from a published source: the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) May 2025 wage data, the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) 2026 compensation report, and Indeed's US salary pages. Where we could not find a reliable published number, we left the role out.

Read the table as a set of anchors, not a price list. BLS medians describe broad occupations across every industry; a CPG national account manager (NAM) sits inside the BLS sales manager group alongside people selling software and industrial equipment. Indeed averages come from advertised salaries, which tend to describe base pay only.
Sales and customer teams
For CPG sales and national account roles, the customer drives pay as much as the title. Customer team leads on the largest retail accounts are usually based near retailer headquarters, and the size and complexity of the account sets the band. BLS notes that sales pay usually mixes salary with commission or bonus, so ask what the target incentive is and how it paid out last year.
Category management roles average $103,553 base on Indeed, above brand managers. That fits the market: category managers who can work with retailer data and win the captain or validator role on a shelf reset are hard to find.
Brand and marketing
Brand managers average $92,643 base on Indeed, while the BLS median for marketing managers (a broader, more senior group) is $166,790. In practice, the CPG ladder runs from associate brand manager (ABM) to brand manager, senior brand manager and marketing director, and pay steps up sharply at each level. See our brand marketing specialism for the roles we cover.
R&D, food science and packaging
The IFT's 2026 compensation report put the median salary for US-based food science professionals at $120,000, up from $107,300 in 2024, with a 4% median raise among those who received one. Entry-level pay rose to $76,000. The BLS median for food scientists and technologists is lower, at $88,720, because it covers a wider group. Packaging engineers average $104,350 base on Indeed, reflecting demand for packaging and sustainability skills.
Plant, maintenance and controls
On the plant floor, controls engineers average $94,048 base on Indeed, and industrial engineers have a BLS median of $102,440. Maintenance technicians and industrial machinery mechanics have a median of $64,520, but BLS notes overtime is common and night or weekend shifts are part of many roles, so total earnings can run well above base. Plant managers average $119,928 on Indeed, and the BLS median for industrial production managers in food manufacturing is $116,250.
What sits on top of base pay in CPG
- Annual bonus: standard for salaried roles; target percentages rise with level
- Commission or sales incentive: common in field sales and some account roles
- Long-term incentives or equity: more common at director level and at venture-backed challenger brands
- Relocation: often offered for plant leadership, controls and customer team roles that require a move
- Shift differential and overtime: typical for hourly maintenance and technician roles
- Benefits: health insurance and 401(k) match vary widely and are worth valuing in any offer comparison
How to benchmark a CPG offer:
- Match the role, not the title. Compare scope, account size or line count, and team size.
- Total the package. Add target bonus, incentive, relocation and the value of benefits.
- Adjust for location. BLS publishes state and metro data; cost of living varies widely between regions.
- Check the date. Use the latest data and note the reference period.
- Ask a specialist. A recruiter working your discipline will know what offers are actually closing at.
How we built this guide
We used BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook data (May 2025 reference period), the IFT 2026 Compensation and Career Path Report as reported by Food Ingredients First, and Indeed US salary pages. We did not adjust figures, and we do not publish regional bands until we have a reliable source for them. For UK figures, see the UK FMCG salary guide, or browse all salary guides. If you are hiring in the US, our US CPG recruiting page explains how we work.

Indeed reports an average base of $94,048 for controls engineers, with a typical range of $59,091 to $149,687 (updated October 2026). Plant type, PLC platform and shift or on-call duties all move the number.
The BLS median for food scientists and technologists was $88,720 in May 2025. The IFT's 2026 report put the median for US-based food science professionals at $120,000 and entry-level pay at $76,000.

Many do. BLS notes that sales pay usually combines salary with commission or bonus. Account and customer team roles at large CPG companies more often use a salary plus annual bonus.
