A packaging engineer in the US earns an average base salary of about $104,000 based on pay advertised on Indeed, while self-reported data from Payscale puts the average base nearer $83,000, at the time of our last update (October 2026). The gap between those two numbers is the first thing to understand about packaging engineer pay: it depends heavily on the data source, your level and the industry you work in. This guide sets out the benchmarks, explains why they differ, and covers what drives pay for packaging engineers at CPG companies.
Packaging engineer salary benchmarks
The three main public sources measure different things, so we show them side by side. None isolates CPG, and none should be read as a precise market rate. Use them as a range to test an offer against, and give more weight to the figure whose method matches your situation.
| Source | Headline figure | Range | Date and sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indeed | $104,350 average base | $59,047 to $184,410 | 674 salaries; updated August 8, 2026 |
| Glassdoor | $119,000 median total pay | $71,000 to $118,000 base; $92,000 to $156,000 total | Newest submission shown August 10, 2026 |
| Payscale | $82,751 average base | $65,000 to $117,000 base (10th to 90th percentile); $64,000 to $122,000 total | 450 profiles; updated July 1, 2026 |
Why do packaging engineer salary figures differ so much?
Three things explain most of the spread. First, method: Indeed uses pay quoted in job postings, which leans toward roles employers are actively hiring for, often at experienced level. Payscale and Glassdoor rely on employees reporting their own pay, which captures more early-career engineers and can lag the market.
Second, the title covers very different jobs. Packaging engineers work in CPG, but also in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, electronics and e-commerce fulfillment, each with its own pay levels. Third, sample size: a few hundred salaries is small, and city-level figures rest on far fewer, so they can swing widely.
There is also no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation for packaging engineers, so there is no official median to anchor against. The nearest broad comparison is industrial engineers, whose median pay was $102,440 in May 2025, with employment projected to grow 12% from 2025 to 2035. Use it as context rather than a direct benchmark.
What does a packaging engineer do in a CPG company?
In a food, beverage, personal care or household products business, the packaging engineer is usually the technical owner of everything that wraps the product. Day to day that means writing and approving specifications, running drop, compression and shelf-life tests, qualifying new suppliers and materials, and supporting line trials when a format changes. On a launch, they work with brand marketing on the look and feel, with procurement on cost, with the plant or co-manufacturer on how the pack runs, and with sales on what each retailer needs. The more of that chain an engineer can lead without supervision, the higher they sit in the pay range.
Packaging engineer pay by experience
Payscale reports an average total compensation of $66,107 for packaging engineers with under a year of experience, based on 65 salaries, and $78,887 for those with one to four years, based on 306. Glassdoor shows engineers with at least two years of experience in a range of $89,179 to $135,774. Payscale lists bonuses of about $2,000 to $12,000 a year, and some employers add profit sharing on top.
The practical step-ups are from engineer to senior engineer, usually when you start leading launches rather than supporting them, and then into packaging manager or principal engineer roles that own a category, a platform or a site's packaging strategy.
What drives packaging engineer pay in CPG?
- Launch ownership: Engineers who take a new pack from concept through line trials to launch, managing suppliers and co-manufacturers, are paid more than those who maintain existing specifications.
- Sustainability and EPR: Seven states, Maine, Oregon, Colorado, California, Minnesota, Maryland and Washington, have packaging EPR programs, according to Holland & Knight (January 2026). Colorado's first producer fee invoices were scheduled from January 1, 2026, Oregon has issued fees based on 2024 data, and California payments are likely to start in 2027. CPG companies need engineers who can redesign packs for recyclability and supply accurate data.
- Line performance: Packaging changes must run at speed on fillers, cartoners and case packers, so experience on high-speed lines is valuable.
- Retailer requirements: Meeting the packaging, shipping and display standards of customers such as Walmart, Kroger, Target and Costco is specialist knowledge.
- Tools and systems: Payscale lists CAD, AutoCAD, project management, product development and SAP Materials Management among the skills associated with the role.
- Location: Indeed's top-paying cities include San Diego, CA ($184,903), Irvine, CA ($130,343) and Los Angeles, CA ($110,078), though these rest on far smaller samples than the national average.

How to benchmark a packaging engineer offer
Use these steps when you weigh an offer or prepare for a pay review:
- Choose the right comparison. Decide whether you are benchmarking against advertised pay (Indeed) or self-reported pay (Payscale, Glassdoor), and be consistent.
- Match the level. Compare against engineers with similar experience and launch ownership, not the national average.
- Adjust for location. Pay in coastal metros can be far higher than in the Midwest or South, so compare against roles in the same area.
- Count total compensation. Add bonus, profit sharing, 401(k) match and relocation support to base salary.
- Evidence your impact. Bring numbers on cost savings, material reduction or recyclability improvements to the conversation.
Is packaging engineering a good career in CPG?
For engineers who like seeing their work on shelf, yes. Packaging sits where engineering, supply chain, marketing and sustainability meet, so packaging engineers build broad commercial awareness. The routes onward include packaging management, R&D leadership, and wider R&D and product development roles. Degrees in packaging science or engineering, or a mechanical, materials or chemical engineering degree with packaging experience, are the usual starting points.
Packaging engineer salary: common questions
Indeed reports an average base of $104,350 from job postings, with a range of $59,047 to $184,410. Payscale's self-reported average is $82,751 (figures at October 2026).
Payscale puts average total compensation at $66,107 for packaging engineers with under a year of experience, and $78,887 for those with one to four years. Pay varies with industry and location.
Often, yes. Payscale lists a bonus range of about $2,000 to $12,000 a year, and some employers also offer profit sharing. Bonus is usually tied to company and individual performance.
They are adding work, because CPG companies need to report packaging data and redesign packs for recyclability in states with EPR programs. We have not found public data that measures the effect on pay directly.
No. BLS does not publish a separate occupation for packaging engineers. Industrial engineers, with a median of $102,440 in May 2025, are a reasonable broad comparison.
